Today I read my daughters Magpie (almost 4) and Kay (almost 2) one of my favorite poems. It is by Emily Dickinson:
I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us - don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know!
How dreary to be somebody!
How public like a frog
To tell one's name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!
Magpie thought it was pretty great, so now I'm inspired to read some poetry every day.
When I looked the poem up online to cut-n-paste it here, I found an alternate version as well:
I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there's a pair of us?
Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!
How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one's name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!
Maybe this will be tomorrow's poem...
